Summer is a perfect time for road trips and adventures, and bringing your dog along makes the journey even better.  To make sure the experience is safe and fun, preparation is key.

First, secure your dog properly during travel.  A dog should never roam freely in a moving vehicle. Use a crash-tested harness secured to the seatbelt or a well-ventilated travel crate. Unsecured dogs are not only at risk during sudden stops, but they can also distract the driver, leading to accidents.

Pack a travel kit for your dog that includes water, portable bowls, food, leash, waste bags, favorite toys, a blanket, and a pet first aid kit. Plan frequent breaks every few hours so your dog can stretch, relieve themselves, and have a drink of water Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, no matter what the reason.  Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a car can soar to deadly levels within minutes.

Before you leave, check if your destination and any stops along the way are dog-friendly. This includes hotels, parks, and restaurants.  Remember, as you travel, your dog will be unfamiliar with its surroundings. Be extra vigilant to make sure there are no unfortunate escapes. Keeping your dog safe and comfortable ensures that you both enjoy the adventure from start to finish.
