Spring Grooming

We are all familiar with 'Spring Cleaning', but what does that mean for pet grooming?

Spring has officially sprung, whether or not the snow keeps falling! Someday soon the cold will pass, the ice will melt, and the sun will brighten our days. Zoomin Groomin is looking forward to a fun and glamorous Spring and Summer season. We will be ready to welcome fur and fluff as Spring Grooming time arrives. To prepare for your pup's next spa day, here are our Spring tips:

1. Brush Brush Brush! Dogs tend to shed their coats in tune with the seasons, and once the weather warms up, the fur starts flying. Dogs with undercoats, like Australian Shepherds or Bernese Mountain Dogs, will seasonally shed their undercoat all at once, called 'blowing their coat' to acclimate to a colder or warmer environment. A routine of brushing will help your double-coated pets shed away their old coats, and allow their new undercoat to circulate air and keep them warm in winter or cool in summer. Dogs with hair-type coats that do not shed as often will still need to be brushed with a steel comb regularly to prevent tangles and matting. 
2. Flea and Tick Preventative We associate fleas and ticks with warm weather, but we've seen flea and tick cases all year round. However, it is true the parasites flourish in warmer climates, and starting in Spring is it important to take extra caution outside. 3. Are Your Pet's Vaccinations Up To Date? Just like people, dogs should receive a yearly health check-up. In order for us to groom your dog, we require proof of up-to-date rabies vaccinations. When the sun shines we're also more inclined to spend time outdoors, and more dog-to-dog contact increases risk of spreading illness. Kennel cough is especially on the rise in Spring and Summer for these reasons. 
4. Plants and Seasonal Allergies Did you know dogs and cats can develop seasonal allergies? Allergies in pets commonly present themselves through skin irritation. If you notice a change in your pet's skin or coat health connected to the seasons, it's possible they are allergic to seasonal pollen or grasses.  Springtime gardens can also pose a hazard; certain types of plants and fertilizers are toxic to dogs. Always select plants that are safe for dogs. 
5. Look Over Your Dog Spring is a great time to check your dog all-over. Assess their coat - is it healthy and shiny? Clean? Do they need their nails trimmed? Is your buddy happy and energetic, or lethargic? Any changes or concerns should be brought up with your veterinarian.
