Florida Zoomin’ Groomin
Zoomin Groomin franchise owner, Paul Johnson, has been grooming since 1982. He was originally trained in Maryland while working as a veterinary surgical assistant.
His natural talents for grooming and art soon took over and combined with his love of animals, the perfect combination was formed. Paul looks at each groom with an artist’s eye and approaches the groom as a sculpture.
So he is able to achieve beauty, both in cuts that are standard to a particular breed and in specialty cuts that an owner might request. He listens to what the dog owner (or “parent” as he prefers to call them) wants instead of trying to figure it out for himself. This ability to listen shows the owners that he isn’t there just to get the job done and leave, he truly wants both owner and pet to walk away from the groom satisfied.
Paul came to Florida in 1993 and managed a pet store while continuing to groom. It was there that the owner, Mona Kilmer, noticed his unique and gentle way of handling animals and decided to help him enhance his grooming talents. She had owned a grooming school in Indiana prior to moving to Florida and because of her help and tips she taught him, Paul was able to fine tune his techniques, thus increasing his speed and ability to achieve the best cut for each breed.
Paul’s speed is also attributed to the fact that he is ambidextrous while grooming, meaning that he can use his clippers with either hand, thus eliminating the need to turn the dog around in the middle of the groom. He simply moves the clipper to his other hand and continues with the haircut. This speed is important to mention because Paul is able to complete a groom in a fraction of the time that it takes other groomers, thus eliminating much of the stress a pet experiences while being groomed.
With his 6′3″ stature, Paul specializes in large dogs, but is by no means limited to them. He also grooms small dogs and cats. Unlike most groomers in this area, his gentle and patient style combined with training as a veterinary assistant enhance his ability to work with geriatric pets. He is able to recognize the extra needs of older pets and provide the especially gentle handling needed during their grooming appointment.
Several times, while working with a pet, Paul has noticed symptoms of serious diseases and skin conditions manifesting themselves, he then recommended that the owner take their pet to the Veterinarian. Often, Paul then would receive a phone call from the owner thanking him, because a problem has been caught in the early stages and a few times even saved their pet’s life. Of course it is important to mention that Paul would never attempt to treat a medical condition himself, because he isn’t medically qualified to do so, but his experience as a vet tech. has proven useful in helping his clients take the best care possible of their pets.
Other services that Paul is qualified to perform are extraction of dogs’ anal glands, nail clipping, pulling hair from dogs’ ears, tooth brushing and medical baths. These services are offered with each groom, as necessary.
Paul is married, with 7 children (which explains all that patience) and several pets, including a hybrid wolf, toy poodle,Chihuahua mix, cats, birds and a turtle. All of the family pets are also family members and are spoiled almost as much as the kids!
His many years of experience have led Paul to become Zoomin Groomin’s Trainer for the state of Florida. And, Paul’s many loyal clients can attest to his ability to groom and to his passion for pets.
