June is a very special month. It is the American Human Association's Adopt A Cat Month as well as the ASPCA's Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.
If you are thinking about a frisky new feline addition for your family, consider adoption. Oftentimes, there are twice as many wonderful kittens and cats at animal shelters looking for forever homes than there are canines. Keep in mind that bringing a new kitten or cat into your home is similar to having a toddler around, meaning, they are capable of getting into everything. Make sure that items that can be chewed and/or swallowed, such as elastic hairbands, tissue, dryer sheets, phone chargers, electrical cords, and more are tucked safely out of reach. The same goes for household cleaning products and medications. Be sure that the plants and flowers in your home are safe for your cat. Tulips, Lilies, English Ivy and Pothos, to name only a few, are toxic to cats. New cat parents will need to develop a whole new awareness of what can and cannot be left out around kitty. Be sure to invest in a scratching post (otherwise the furniture and drapes may be fair game) as well as some fun toys such as the feather wand and balls that jingle. Unable to adopt at this time? There are other ways to show your support. June is "Kitten Season", and many animal shelters need more hands on deck. Volunteering and/or fostering kittens is a great way to get involved and help support your local shelter. Best of all, you'll be surrounded by kittens and cats! June 4th is International Hug Your Cat Day, so be sure to give kitty an extra hug!
